Keeping Toxins Out of Our Home ~ Green Moms Carnival

This post is my contribution to the March Green Moms Carnival, hosted by Lori of Groovy Green Livin.

When I wrote a book review of Deanna Duke’s The Non-Toxic Avenger: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You, I stated five goals for our own home that were inspired by the book.

  1. Find a new toxin-free toothpaste for Joshua
  2. Try out crystal deodorant for myself, and switch Ed to Certain Dri
  3. Switch to toxin-free bar soap, and try out shampoo bars
  4. Try coconut oil as a moisturizer
  5. Switch to Ecover dishwasher tablets

I’ve been working toward achieving these goals and finding good solutions to keep toxic chemicals out of our home. Finding a toxin-free toothpaste for Joshua was a challenge. I wanted to make sure it was free of parabens, sodium laurel sulfate and fluoride. Joshua’s idea of brushing his teeth is to suck the toothpaste off of the toothbrush and then ask for more, so fluoride-free was a must. After spending way too much time reading labels in the toothpaste aisles of local stores and lots of online discussions and research, we decided to go with Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry Fluoride-Free toothpaste. It still has SLS, but it doesn’t have parabens or fluoride, it has a Skin Deep rating of 2 (Fair)

  1. We use the same toothpaste for Baby!

Hopefully, I’ll be able to get my carnival entry in tomorrow!

  2. I use most of these products. Tom’s of Maine toothpaste is the best I’ve been able to find outside of making your own with baking soda. I use crystal deodorant but still have a wetness issue – I will try that Certain Dri. :) And I will definitely have to give coconut oil a try! Must smell nice.
